  10.        This release note describes patch SG0000166 to IRIX 5.3.

  27.           +o If Indigo Magic is used in an environment that uses NFS
  28.             mounted file systems heavily, the File Alteration
  29.             Monitor (fam) generates a lot of NFS traffic,
  30.             continually polling remote files and directories for
  31.             changes.  (Bug #247478)
  32.  
  33.             This patch provides a way to partially disable fam.
  34.             Fam normally polls files and directories on mounted NFS
  35.             file systems for changes every 6 seconds.  When fam is
  36.             disabled, remote files and directories are not polled,
  37.             and changes are not reported.  Changes to remote files
  38.             will not be reflected in Indigo Magic directory views.
  39.             Fam still monitors local files and directories
  40.             normally.
  41.  
  42.             To disable fam, edit /etc/inetd.conf and append " -l"
  43.             to the line that begins "sgi_fam/1".  E.g.,

  76.        Because you want to install patches for only the problems
  77.        you have encountered, patch software is not installed by
  78.        default. After reading the descriptions of the bugs fixed in
  79.        this patch, determine the patches that meet your specific
  80.        needs.

  82.        Patch software is installed like any other Silicon Graphics
  83.        software product.  It must be installed from the miniroot.
  84.        Follow the instructions in your _I_R_I_S _S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n
  85.        _G_u_i_d_e to bring up the miniroot form of the software
  86.        installation tools.

  88.        Follow these steps to select a patch for installation:

  90.          1.  At the Inst>prompt, type

  102.          4.  You may find that two patches have been marked as
  103.              incompatible.  If this occurs, you must deselect one
  104.              of the patches.

  110.          5.  After completing the installation process, exit the

  116.        To remove a patch, use the _v_e_r_s_i_o_n_s _r_e_m_o_v_e command as you
  117.        would for any other software subsystem.  The removal process
  118.        reinstates the original version of software unless you have
  119.        specifically removed the patch history from your system.
